Show of the Week: Prey and 5 Times You Got Tricked by Shapeshifters

Mighty morphin' horror dangers

Prey tells the story of Morgan Yu, a scientist on a space station overrun by mimics: horrible scuttling shadow monsters that disguise themselves as ordinary household objects to trick you into getting your face near them. That's far from the only time we've been tricked by shapeshifters in videogames, as we recollect later in the show.

At least you know where you are with a regular monster, demon or other non-shapeshifting villain. If they're going to kick your head off, they're going to do it face to face, not sneak up on you disguised as a treasure chest or a table lamp or whatever.

Take Clayface, from Batman: Arkham City, for example. This shapeshifting bad guy squished his gigantic mud body into the shape of Joker's skinny clown body, to trick Batman into thinking Joker is healthy and in front of him instead of sick and behind him and about to shoot Talia in the spine, the swine.

Don't even get me started on Mortal Kombat mainstay Shang Tsung who is always transforming himself into other Mortal Kombat fighters at the least convenient times.

This shapeshifting warlock can't get enough of using his demonic magic to take on the form of his opponent, to create a sudden and confusing mirror match that will give him the upper hand. As will turning an evil clown, I expect. I mean, why else would he do it so much?
