The 8 Weirdest Bosses in Side-Scrolling Beat-'Em-Ups We Still Can't Explain

Published A year ago by Andy Farrant

Scroll with the punches

Side scrolling beat-'em-ups need to have loads of enemies in them, otherwise they would be 10 minutes long. But you can't just recolour everyone or make the player fight evil clones of themselves forever. That's how we ended up with bizarre boss designs that are surely the result of a late night, a looming deadline and way, way too many cups of coffee. Consider these, our eight favourites.

Take, for example, Streets of Rage 3, which featured as a boss character a boxing kangaroo named Roo and his trainer Bruce.

To be clear, this wasn't in a circus level or anything. The boss fight took place in a location known as 'city streets', not somewhere you would expect to find a combat kangaroo and his trainer, who appeared to be some kind of robot clown with a whip.
